New and Transfer Students
New and transfer students are assigned specific dates and times to register after connecting with a success coach prior to the start of the semester. Students are notified by mail of their scheduled registration date options. More information can be found regarding advisement, registration dates, times and locations including placement testing and preparing for advisement.
Entering Student Math and English Placement
Most students receive placements based on their academic record. This includes high school transcripts, college transcripts, and/or TASC/GED scores. You may see your placement in Degree Works. If placements cannot be determined based on academic record, you will receive department permission to take a math placement test or consult with the academic department. If you have questions about your placement, please email your success coach/advisor.
For Mathematics:
MCC uses high school mathematics course grades, Regents Exam scores, overall GPA, length of time since the last successful math course, credit college math courses, and standardized tests such as SAT and ACT. We can also use GED or TASC scores. (Please note, while college credits do not expire, high school grades and other standardized tests may only be used for placement for 4 years.)
For English:
Students who have scored a 76 or higher (or score 3-4) on the Regents English 11 exam will be placed at ENG 101 College Composition. Students who have scored a 85 or higher (or 5 and higher) on the English Regents exam will be placed at ENG 200 Advanced Composition.
Students who have scored a minimum of 500 on the critical reading section of the SAT or a minimum of 21 on the English section of the ACT will be placed at ENG 101 College Composition.
Students applying for readmission:
High school graduates applying for readmission to the College, who have completed placement testing within three years prior to reapplication, may be placed by applying current placement guidelines to their original test scores.
Testing Accommodations:
Appropriate ESOL testing for English will be available for students whose first language is not English.
Students with documented disabilities will be provided with testing accommodations to which the College determines they are entitled, consistent with the appropriate laws.
